The facet approach outlined here owes its origins to the 'facets' described within the FoodOn ontology. FoodOn describe each of their facets as falling under a Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) ontology class – generally a type of material entity, quality, information about a (food) product, or process
For CDNO we present facets relating to the components that contribute to nutrition - primarily, but not exclusively, dietary nutrition (i.e. that inheres in food). Each CDNO facet is described with vocabulary, definitions and structured relationships associated with each major CDNO class. Starting with 'dietary chemical components', these also include the 'chemical component concentration', 'dietary material physical attribute', 'nutritional functional attribute' and 'dietary role' classes.
